Philanthropist Ann Lesley Smith and her Purebred Arabian Horse, Amir Fadjur Salaam

Ann Lesley Smith’s prized Arabian stallion, Amir Fadjur Salaam, is not just a rare example of this dynastic breed; he is a living connection between ancient Arabian bloodlines and today’s hustle-and-bustle world. Amir’s example of empathy and compassion has its place in today’s culture of often synthetic connections, and with his human-like ability to understand and “read minds,” Amir is emerging as a much-needed symbol of peace in an increasingly divided world.

The Fadjur dynasty

Amir Fadjur Salaam is a direct descendant of The Fabulous Fadjur, one of the most celebrated and awarded Arabian horses in recent history. One attribute of Fadjur that stood out, making him what some called the “Crown Jewel of America,” was his incredible human-like temperament.

Arabian breed historians consider Amir’s pedigree to be a “powerhouse,” carefully preserved in the United States for over 170 years by dedicated stewards.

Like Fadjur, Amir has been prized not only as a top-tier Arabian specimen but also for what Smith calls an “unusual concentration of kindness.” For thousands of years, Arabian horses have been bred for traits such as loyalty, intuition, empathy, and a human-like kindness that Amir seems to embody in a particularly focused way.

“Amir is highly perceptive, deeply sensitive, and eager to connect with people,” says Smith.

Arab nomads raised their Arabian horses not as beasts of burden but as almost members of the family, cultivating trust and emotional understanding.

“Amir’s personality reflects that heritage,” she explains.

Each time Amir wanders the grounds of Smith’s California estate or approaches one of her many visitors, his unique effect is clear.

Amir’s role in helping people find peace

Amir lives with other Arabian and non-Arabian horses on Smith’s sprawling California estate. With its serene backdrop, the estate plays a significant role in Smith’s outreach to people seeking a reset. While Smith has other horses, Amir has helped shape this next chapter of her life more than any other horse on her property.

“We invite people who may be burned out, exhausted, or just need a new perspective,” says Smith. “They can come and rest here, be among the horses, and witness the transformative power of the freedom these horses embody.”

Smith says she has watched people drop their defenses when they are around the horses, crediting Amir’s particular personality for teaching people how empathy can be healing.

Smith has broader plans for Amir as well. Through exhibitions, she hopes to position Amir as a living symbol and ambassador of peace. The exhibitions will showcase his dynastic lineage, the traditional role of the Arabian horse as a historic diplomatic gift that symbolized peace, and his ability to be a cultural bridge in a time that is deeply divided.

For centuries, Arabian horses have acted as emissaries between tribes and nations. They were also offered as gestures of goodwill and respect to leaders.

“I believe we can revive this tradition, and Amir is the perfect Arabian stallion to represent this new era of connection and peace-building,” explains Smith.

In a time when every gesture, large or small, counts, Smith is excited about what is possible.

Amir as a workbench for technology

Smith feels Amir’s particular brand of equine empathy may apply to technology innovators as well. His lineage and the thousands of years of unique breeding could inform the next generation of artificial intelligence.

“We are living in a world that often feels contrived or synthetic,” she says. “I believe we can look to the Arabian horse as an example for instilling empathy not only in everyday interactions but in technology as well.”

Spurred into brainstorming by the recent release of AI robots built to help people with everyday tasks, Smith feels that developers could learn from how ancient Bedouins programmed’ empathy into their Arabian horses.

“I just think we need to ask ourselves if modern systems can be inspired by the gentleness and intuition that has been bred into horses like Amir,” she offers.

Why Amir’s story resonates

The story of Amir Fadjur Salaam is compelling because it is multifaceted. He is a prized Arabian stallion with a once-in-a-lifetime personality that has made him a healing presence for many who have sought rest at Smith’s estate. Amir has also been positioned as an ambassador of peace at a time when we need to seek out the helpers — and the peacemakers.

Amir’s gentle eyes invite people to feel, and that is what sets him apart from other horses. For Smith, he has changed her life for the better and led her down a path of reaching out and giving back.
